On the second week of the school year, Courtney Gomola, outdoor education coordinator at Plumas Charter School invited Taylorsville teacher Ms. Lauren and Quincy teacher Ms. Cindy to pack up their fifth-and-sixth-graders for an educational camping trip at Lassen Volcanic National Forest.
The students, teachers and chaperones spent part of the week at Volcano Adventure Camp where they enjoyed hiking, outdoor education activities and ranger-led talks at the scenic national park. The adventurers traveled along Nobles Emigrant Trail and acted out different scenarios pioneers may have encountered on their journey. “The campers discovered the different types of volcanoes and made models of those found in the park,” said Gomola. The students also used compasses to navigate an orienteering course and learned about bats one evening around the campfire as the winged-mammals flew overhead.
