Warriors hoop season features growth and milestones
Posted on 02/03/2026

With about three-quarters of the 2025-26 high school basketball season in the books, the Plumas Charter School Warriors’ junior varsity boys, varsity girls and varsity boys teams are each carving out their own competitive stories on the court.

JV Boys Work to Build Momentum

The Warriors junior varsity boys basketball team has embraced a season centered on development and long-term program growth. The team opened its season Dec. 9 with a road game against Los Molinos, falling 60–24, and later faced Etna on Jan. 4 in a 40–22 loss and Burney on Jan. 7 in a 61-20 loss.

While the results have been challenging, the focus for the JV squad has been on building fundamental skills and developing chemistry on the court. Practices have emphasized ball handling, defensive positioning and confidence under pressure, with players gaining valuable exposure to varsity-level expectations.

Coach Kaley Bentz sees the JV season as a critical foundation for the future of Warriors basketball, providing athletes with the tools and experience needed to grow into competitive varsity contributors in the seasons ahead.

Varsity Girls Showing Grit and Team Effort

The Warriors varsity girls basketball team has shown determination and growth throughout the season, compiling a 5-8 overall record and 3-1 in Pioneer League play. The team earned a hard-fought 41-32 victory over Paradise Adventist Academy, highlighted by a balanced performance and strong rebounding effort. In that game, Jaycee Pew was a key contributor, posting eight points and eight rebounds while shooting a season-best 44%, anchoring an effort that included 14 offensive rebounds — part of a streak of at least nine offensive boards in each of the team’s last 31 games. Pew’s presence on both ends of the court has helped fuel the Lady Warriors’ success, while teammates like Amaiya Beatty, who chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, have provided complementary scoring and energy. The girls have faced challenges in non-league matchups, including losses to Burney and Adventure Christian, but have continued to compete with physicality and teamwork as the season progresses.

Varsity Boys Highlighted by Milestones and Dominant Scoring

The Warriors varsity boys basketball team has posted some of its most impressive performances of the season over the past month, combining offensive firepower with key individual milestones. On Jan. 23, Plumas Charter turned in its highest point total of the season, blasting Elk Creek 101–13 — a dominant showing in which the Warriors scored in every quarter and padded a record that now stands above .500.

That victory is one of several strong outings for the Warriors, who also recorded convincing wins earlier in the season, including 84–51 and 87–54 wins over Princeton and an 82–45 victory against Herlong. Even in tougher contests, the Warriors have remained competitive: a 67–60 loss at Westwood saw senior standout Dalton Bentz score 32 points and pull down 13 rebounds, continuing a stretch in which he has consistently put up high scoring totals.

Perhaps the season’s marquee moment came on Jan. 13 against Loyalton, when Bentz reached a rare individual milestone by scoring his 2,000th career point. Only seven players in the history of the Northern Section have ever achieved the feat, underscoring Bentz’s sustained excellence, consistency and leadership on the court.

Through balanced offensive outings, dominant wins and meaningful development even in tight games, the varsity boys have built momentum as they aim to close the regular season strong and compete deep into postseason play.

Looking Ahead

As winter league play nears its conclusion and the playoffs draw closer, all three Warriors teams are focused on continued improvement, competitive spirit and representing Plumas Charter School with pride.

The JV boys are aiming to gain traction as they develop their identity, the varsity girls are positioned to make a strong league run, and the varsity boys are solidly in the mix for post-season contention, buoyed by key performances and consistent contributions across the roster.
