On May 21, junior high and high school students from Plumas Charter School’s Quincy, Chester and Greenville sites came together at the Indian Valley Academy campus for a field trip designed for fun and connection. What unfolded was a day of games, a shared meal and a powerful message of motivation that reminded students they’re part of something bigger: a thriving, united school community.
Gary McFarland helped coordinate the event and it was generously funded by Plumas Rural Services, whose support made it possible to bring in speakers from Victory 4 Youth, a California-based nonprofit that works to empower and inspire young people. Known for their energetic and heartfelt presentations, Victory 4 Youth delivered a message focused on hope, courage and purpose—offering students a chance to reflect on their own strengths and the value of supporting one another.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, representatives from Plumas Rural Services, Plumas County Behavioral Health and Plumas County Probation were also on hand to support the day’s mission. They distributed wellness bags to students and were available throughout the event to connect with youth and promote resources for emotional well-being.
The day began early, with students departing their home campuses to make the scenic drive to Greenville. Upon arrival, they were greeted with two hours of games and team-building activities designed to encourage collaboration and create new friendships across sites.
A highlight of the day was the lunch prepared and served by IVA’s culinary class, giving students the chance to enjoy a delicious meal while supporting their peers’ hands-on learning.
After lunch, students gathered for an inspiring session with the keynote presenters. Victory 4 Youth speakers are known for connecting with teens through attention-grabbing “feats of strength,” authentic storytelling, encouragement and life-changing messages that help youth face challenges with confidence and resilience. Breakout sessions gave students time to reflect, ask questions and build a deeper connection with the message.
The event wrapped up with students returning to their home campuses, energized and uplifted by the day’s experiences. It was a fun, memorable opportunity to strengthen connections across sites and reinforce the supportive culture at Plumas Charter School.
