Nearly a decade after graduating from Plumas Charter School’s Chester Learning Center, Blue Balcita is continuing to build a future centered around education, compassion and helping others.
A member of the PCS Class of 2016, Balcita is currently pursuing her master’s degree in psychology with an emphasis in gerontology through Grand Canyon University while also working full time at Good Samaritan Shelter’s Welcome Home Village in San Luis Obispo. Her long-term goal is to become a clinical psychologist.
Balcita said her time at PCS helped prepare her for the independence and responsibility that came with graduating early and entering adulthood at a young age. She completed high school at just 16 years old before moving into college coursework and the workforce.
“I graduated PCS at 16 and went out into the world into college and jobs,” she shared, reflecting on how the school’s flexible structure helped her transition into life after graduation.
When looking back on the people who made the biggest impact during her educational journey, Balcita credited CLC teacher and administrator Keri Reed for continually encouraging her to step outside of her comfort zone.
“She always encouraged me to socialize and participate,” Balcita said. “She always encouraged me to be more.”
Outside of work and school, Balcita continues to pursue creative interests including writing, reading, photography, journalism and the arts, passions she says were also nurtured during her years at PCS.
In a message to PCS staff, Balcita expressed appreciation for the mentorship and opportunities she experienced throughout her time at the school.
“I wanted to say thank you for the mentorship you all provided to me,” she wrote. “Thanks for all you did, to each and every one of you.”
As Plumas Charter School continues highlighting alumni success stories, Balcita’s journey reflects the school’s focus on personalized learning, flexibility and supporting students as they pursue a wide variety of paths beyond graduation.
