Chester Students gather at Spring FormalStudents from across Plumas County gathered at the Veterans’ Hall in Quincy Friday, May 18, for Plumas Charter School’s inaugural Spring Formal.

“It’s like the charter school’s prom,” said Kylie Anderson, a freshman from the school’s Quincy site who was on the event’s student planning committee with five other teens.

“We wanted to do something for the charter school; we wanted it so freshmen could go as well. We tried to make it clear that everyone is welcome,” said Anderson.

The event was open to all PCS high school students and their guests, said PCS Director Taletha Washburn.

“It’s all-inclusive,” she said, reinforcing the fact that PCS is a community-based school.

Washburn said students had requested the event and the school hopes to continue it in future years, perhaps rotating hosting duties among Plumas Charter School sites.

More than 40 teens, ranging from high school freshmen to recent charter school graduates, dressed in their best and gathered to dance and mingle. The school’s Chester learning site and Indian Valley Academy were well-represented, and guests from other schools were in attendance as well.

Several students contributed hors d’oeuvres. The student planning committee collaborated on the music by contributing to a Spotify playlist, and they worked together to create the decorations.

“In the future we’ll probably split it up,” said Anderson. “It’s our first time; we have stuff to learn.”

Joanne Burgueno, of Joanne Burgueno Photography, took professional portraits of attendees in couples and groups.

PCS teachers and staff chaperoned in shifts throughout the evening, many making their presence felt on the dance floor and encouraging their young charges.

“This is something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Anderson.
