Update on recent Quincy learning center activities

Greetings PCS students, families, and staff:

This year has gotten off to a great start. The challenges and obstacles that had emerged in our preparation for this school year have been diminished by the positive attitude and “can-do” spirit of our school community: teachers, students, parents, and community volunteers alike.

Here are some of the great things happening around the Quincy school sites this year:

  • The seventh- through 10th-graders have been out and about in town and participating in the local community. Students have already been able to volunteer at the Quincy Natural Foods demonstration garden and get a fantastic orientation at Feather River College, including overviews of the fish hatchery and the Outdoor Recreation and Leadership program. Ms. Hannah stretched the legs of the junior high students on their annual trip to the Sierra Buttes lookout tower. Students are also taking advantage of using the Yoga and Wellness Center for their performing arts and yoga classes.
  • Ms. Courtney, our new garden and outdoor education coordinator, is well-traveled up and down Lawrence and Main streets. She spends part of her day in the morning with the older students, and then has several groups of engaged elementary students join her in the back play area and garden at 535 Lawrence. Amidst all of that, she still manages to take a group off campus each Friday. A recent hike was to Jamison Lake. Great job everyone!
  • Our sixth-graders attended Feather River Outdoor Education Camp in September. This is a great experience for all of our students, because it fosters independence and self-discovery but also creates the perfect venue for the classes to grow as whole. Meanwhile, students are learning about the natural environment that surrounds them here in Plumas County.
  • A number of our grade levels have ventured down the street to Five Foot Farm: a fantastic opportunity to learn about the harvest and local agriculture.

On the new facility front, Taletha is continuing to work on the loan closing process, as well as meeting with contractors and architects for the next steps. A community meeting opportunity will be provided within the next month. Taletha and Maggie traveled to Chico to tour a recently built charter school and to meet with contractors. More on this soon!

Hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy the last of our beautiful mountain summer weather!
